Dear HVC Members,
February is here, and our meeting is less than a week away! Hope to see you all there.
February Meeting – Thursday, February 15th – 7:30pm
At our February meeting, we will be treated to a talk by Mr. Sebastián Encina, Collections Manager at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. Mr. Encina has spoken for our chapter before (in October of 2016, he gave a talk entitled “What Happens After It is Uncovered?” about how artifacts make their way to the Kelsey), and those who attended that talk surely understand why I am excited to welcome him back as a speaker.
The precise topic of this talk is still a little bit up in the air, but I may send an addendum to the newsletter later in the week to let you all know what it is.
Dinner – 6pm – Please RSVP
If you would like to join the speaker, chapter officers and HVC members for dinner beforehand, please RSVP with myself at your earliest convenience. As per usual, our dinner will be at The Original Cottage Inn Restaurant, 512 E William St, Ann Arbor, MI 48104. Reservations are for 6pm, under the name: Marshall Gaines. We hope to see you there!
1.) 2018 is here, which means the time to pay 2018 MAS dues has arrived with it. Members can send in their dues for 2018 whenever they choose. Membership info can be found at: http://miarch.org/join.html
2.) I have some news to share with you about The Michigan Archaeologist, the annually published journal about archaeology in the state of Michigan which is published by the MAS. As many of you know, the society has been behind in publishing the journal for some time. According to MAS president Dan Wymer, Volume 57 of the journal (dated 2011) should have arrived via mail to paid members recently. Volume 58 is to be sent out around March 1. Volumes 59-64 (64 being the 2018 volume) are planned out and will hopefully all be sent out within the next year or two – I will have more information about this after an upcoming MAS state meeting later this month.
3.) Our chapter elections will be taking place at the March meeting (March 15, 2018). I will run for chapter president again, and Cherokee Gonzalez has plans to continue as our Vice President if re-elected. Our secretary, Mark Corrao, plans to step down, so we will need to elect somebody to take over the position. If you are interested in this, speak to me and/or Mark at the next meeting, or email me.
Other Upcoming Events:
1.) March 3, 2018 – Great Lakes Shipwreck Festival, taking place at Washtenaw Community College. Previous HVC speakers Dan Harrison and Daryl Wright will have booths at the festival, and it looks like there are a lot of interesting programs scheduled. More info available here.
2.) February 15, 2018, 4:10-5pm – FAST Lecture: Analysing a Classical Greek Urban Community: The Olynthos Project, presented by Lisa Nevett, Drew Cabaniss, Machal Gradoz, Nadhira Hill, and Michael Koletsos. More info available here.
3.) February 21, 2018, 6:00-7:30pm – New Archaeology Music, an interesting looking event in which U-M students and alumni will be performing their interpretations of a piece of ancient papyrus sheet music uncovered in the Karanis excavations. More info here.
4.) March 15, 2018, 7:30pm – March HVC Meeting – Speaker and topic TBA
5.) March 22, 2018, 5:30-7:30pm – West Meets East: Commerce Between Ancient Rome and South Asia presented by Dr. Sethuraman Suresh at the Kelsey Museum. More info here.
As always, let me know if you have any questions or comments at email@example.com! I hope to see you all soon!
